Bazi Without the Jargon
A plain-English introduction to the eight-character chart and what it actually says about you.
Bazi (八字, "eight characters") is the Chinese system that uses your birth year, month, day, and hour to describe your underlying energetic shape. Stripped of jargon, here is what it actually is.
Four pillars, two characters each
Year, month, day, hour. Each gets a Heavenly Stem (one of ten) and an Earthly Branch (one of twelve). Together that's eight characters — your chart.
The day master
The Heavenly Stem of your birthday is called your "day master". It is the single most important character, and it carries one of the five elements. This is the element you most identify with.
Excess and deficiency
Your eight characters together usually emphasise one or two elements and underplay others. Wearing the underplayed elements helps balance the chart. This is the structural reason WuXing dressing works.
What it does NOT do
It does not predict the future like a horoscope. It does not tell you who to marry. It is closer to a personality blueprint than a fortune cookie.
