First Impression Color: What to Wear to a Meeting That Matters
Three colors that consistently outperform in first meetings, and one to avoid.
You have one first impression. Color does more of the work than most people credit. Here is the short, honest version of what wins.
Navy — the safest authority
Navy is the most cross-culturally trusted color in business. It reads competent without intimidating. If you can only own one suit, own it in navy.
Camel — warm authority
Camel signals taste and stability. It outperforms beige (which can read tentative) and grey (which can read drab). A camel coat over almost anything elevates a first impression.
A single deep red accent
Not head-to-toe. A red lipstick, a burgundy tie, a scarlet pocket square. It says "I am confident and willing to be remembered." Pair against navy or camel, not against black (too theatrical).
The one to avoid
All-over bright yellow. It reads as nervous energy in formal first meetings, even though it photographs beautifully. Save it for second meetings or creative contexts.
